Pub Feed: Sydney’s Finest Gastro Pubs

                When it comes to food, pubs, even the regular ones, have upped their game. Gastro pubs, however, are a whole different story. With food and drink equally in mind, many gastro pubs around Sydney excel at both taste and comfort. We’ve rounded up a list of Sydney’s finest gastro pubs, for you to check out.
●     The Unicorn – Opened in Oxford St, this pub has decided to go with an old-school menu; mixed grill, Mary’s burger and crackling-cover roast pork all the way! Although other bars offer better food, The Unicorn definitely excels when it comes to classic Australian pub food. This gives the whole pub vibe a boost – from steaks drenched in gravy to schnitzels and chook-raffle chops. Definitely worth a go!
●     Woolwich Pier Hotel – Built in 1885, the Woolwich Pier Hotel is a well-known venue for every Sydneysider. Although this spot had a long tradition, it has since been renovated and relaunched and is now one of the most popular harbour-side hotels in Sydney. The hotel bar is a hugely popular one, with a great reputation for good eating, drinking and sports watching. Boasting timber decking and heated bungalows on the ground floor this bistro creates a very inviting atmosphere.

●     Lazy Suzie – This Malaysian hawker-style street food restaurant and bar was opened by Zacharay Tan on Stanley St, in Darlinghurst part, East Sydney. It offers many tasty dishes, such as pastry cups filled with braised shitake, called “pie tee”, carrot and mud crab and fried chicken wings. They also offer a great variety of cocktails and Asian-inspired mocktails.  When it comes to alcoholic beverages, we recommend Kopitiam – a Pierre Ferrand Cognac, cold drip coffee liqueur, coconut and cardamom combo with a shot of espresso and the Penang Blazer, a combination of Cubaney Spiced Rum, dessert wine, macadamia, banana leaf and Burlesque & Peychaud’s Bitters.

●     Hunter Gatherer – Jumping over to North Sydney, this bar and eatery offers a rotating menu, which includes mains of Bannock-burn free-range chicken with olives, confit garlic, lemon and thyme and some lighter dishes to go with your beverage, such as spiced eggplant, halloumi and tomato salad with parsley and chickpeas. This is a great Friday night gastro pub!
●     The Cook’s Garden – This restaurant offers stylish ambiance (as they quite accurately state on their website) and a relaxed atmosphere of an English-style pub, called The Garden Tap. They offer many interesting desserts, such as the Persian Love Cake, a combination of pistachio brittle, vanilla bean labne and rose fairy floss. When it comes to the main dishes, we recommend the Baked NZ King salmon, with miso puree, charred baby gem lettuce, soy braised shitake mushrooms, ponzu and toasted black sesame seeds. As a side dish, choose the interestingly named Shoestring fries, with garlic mayonnaise and a Baked cauliflower salad with tomato kasundi, ricotta, toasted seeds and watercress. The modern taste of the Cook’s Garden cuisine also offers vegetarian options and  if you cannot make up your mind on what to eat, you may opt for their Taster menu.

●     Bar Chinois – Located in Chippendale, this chinoserie, hip, chic, French-Asian food bar runs in a two-storey terrace house in the middle of the street! Expect artisan cocktails and food and hospitality that extends from the early morning until late at night. To make things interesting, this bar offers a rotating events calendar!
This list should provide insight into some of the Sydney’s finest gastro pubs and food bars. We’ve tried and tested everything mentioned on the list and we loved the food and had a great time drinking with friends afterwards. There is nothing better to complement a fun night of drinking than having a nice side dish snack after a good meal and a couple of cold ones!
